Recently named as one of the top dental professionals in the area by Palm Springs Life Magazine, Dr. Peter M. Scheer is a medical and dental professional who is well known in the Coachella Valley for both his expertise in oral, maxillofacial, and cosmetic surgery and his contributions to the community. Although he has used his skills on the celebrities who flock to the Desert Maxillofacial Center, he is known in the area as a kind and personable dentist who does what he can to ensure a positive patient experience. He is also noted for his volunteer work to improve the dental health among children and the uninsured.
Raised in Europe, Dr. Scheer has been in private practice in the Coachella Valley since 1986. With both a dental degree and a degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from Loma Linda University in California, he continued his studies in maxillofacial surgery, dermatology, facial surgery, and dental implants. Currently, he is an active staff member both at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs and at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage.
Dr. Scheer is recognized as a world renowned Board Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and Oral Implantology/Implant Dentist, as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. Known internationally for implementing and teaching the latest techniques both here and abroad in both Oral, Maxillofacial, & Cosmetic Surgery, he has published extensively and has served as an Assistant Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Loma Linda University and as a Teaching Professor at the University of Vienna in Austria.
In 1994, as he designed and built the 30,000 square foot Desert Maxillofacial Center, he vowed to make continuing education a priority and available to his colleagues. To date, he continues to host continuing education lecture series in his state-of-the-art multimedia theater.
Dr. Scheer’s training and expertise have helped many patients who have suffered from painful disfiguring injuries to the mouth and face. He has, for example, repaired the face of a jet skier whose face was literally sliced into pieces when he hit a waterski tow rope. He also repaired the face of a suicidal man who blew off his own face, and aided two bar patrons attacked by a fellow patron with a machete.
Although his practice includes celebrities, business executives, and fellow physicians from around the world, he makes it a priority to use his skill and compassion to enhance the lives of people, particularly children coping with facial disfigurement, deformity or trauma.
Every year, he volunteers at a free dental, vision, and healthcare clinic, sponsored by Goldenvoice, producers of the Coachella Fest and Stagecoach Musical Festivals, where professional volunteers contribute over million dollars’ worth of services to nearly 3,000 people. Dr. Scheer feel strongly about this work. As he puts it, there are “a lot of people who still fall through the cracks and we have an amazing amount of need here in the Coachella Valley. You don’t need to go to South America or overseas to provide care. All you need to go is 20 kilometers away from here.”
