First, men are simply more careful and open about their appearance now than ever. In addition to that, business culture has become increasingly geared toward youth. So even middle-aged men are finding it more important to appear young in order to remain competitive in the business world.

If you are a guy looking for a young yet distinguished look, why not try one of these procedures that are so popular with our male patients?

BOTOX®: A quick fix for fine lines around the eyes and on the forehead, both of which can be a dead giveaway of your age, BOTOX® is simple and pain-free. In just five minutes (you heard us!), we can relax the muscles that are encouraging those wrinkles to make you look younger. Remember that the effects are temporary, lasting about 6 months before you will need re-treatment.

Juvéderm®: While BOTOX® treats the upper half of the face, Juvéderm® goes to work on the bottom half. Juvéderm® is an injectable filler that literally fills in lines around the mouth. Common fixes that we do in our office are for “parentheses” (lines that go from the nose down to the chin) and marionette lines (lines that extend from the corners of the mouth straight down.) The appointment is just 15 minutes long and the results are temporary, lasting 6-12 months. After that, you will need re-treatment to maintain the look.

Blepharoplasty – (Eyelid Surgery): As men age, their eyelids tend to sag, looking heavier and giving them a tired look. A tried and true fix for this dilemma is eyelid surgery. During this procedure, we remove excess skin and fat to give you a look that is more in tune with your youthful energy! This surgery is done under local anesthesia (awake) at our surgery center. You will need a ride home after the procedure and will be required to rest. The look is permanent, and although you could still develop wrinkles in the area, it is unlikely that the bags will return as the fat has been removed.

Body Procedures: There are three popular procedures among men for fixing “problem areas” on the body. They are liposuction (for love handles or belly fat), gynecomastia surgery (excess breast tissue), and brachioplasty (arm lift for excess skin and fat under the arms.) All are safe and permanent procedures, performed in our surgery centers under general anesthesia and require rest at home following the procedure.

Guys, please don’t be shy! We want you to know that we see men every day in our office and are able to successfully give them the young, distinguished look they desire!

Did you know Botox® was originally created to treat people with crossed eyes? In the 60s, Dr. Alan Scott thought if he could relax the muscle that caused the crossing, he’d be able to cure it. The San Franciscan ophthalmologist was onto something, and after testing a strain of purified botulism (that acts as a paralytic) he had successfully created Oculinum. His discovery was later renamed Botox® and rebranded as a wrinkle paralyzer.

While Dr. Scott was out to find a cure for crossed eyes, the medical community has since discovered numerous other uses for Botox® and the list keeps growing.

While we use Botox® for cosmetic purposes, here are six other surprising ways Botox® is used. In these cases, relief is temporary, but a great option when other treatments are not effective or cause too many other side effects.

Chronic Migraine

Botox® can be used as a preventative treatment for chronic migraine sufferers (defined by 15 or more migraines per month) with injections into the muscles of the head and neck.

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Commonly injected under the skin of armpits, hands, feet, or face; Botox® blocks signals the brain sends to sweat glands.

Overactive Bladder

Injected into the wall of the bladder, Botox® has been found to be an effective way of treating people who suffer from urinary incontinence by reducing leaking, feeling the need to urinate right away, and frequent bathroom trips.

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD and TMJ)

Jaw tension and pain can be eased by injections into the temporomandibular joint (where the skull and jaw connect). This eases tension by relaxing the joint and muscles.

Muscle Spasms and Tightening

Botox® can be injected into muscles to treat cervical dystonia (a condition that causes the muscles in your neck to tighten or spasm without your control) and Upper Limb Spasticity (in which muscles in your body become stiff or tight).

Speech Impairments

For voice disorders caused by dysphonia, Botox® injections into the larynx decrease muscle spasms or abnormal movements.

Though we may not provide all of these services, Botox® is a fascinating treatment, and we can’t wait to see what the medical community learns next!

Let’s face it: dull, dry winter skin makes you look older. Just think back to summer when your skin was tan (fake, hopefully), taut, and glowing. Even in milder climates, winter skin is simply not the same as its moist, vibrant summer counterpart!

If you wake up in the winter feeling parched, you are not imagining it. Winter air is cooler, and cannot hold as much water as warm summer air. That combined with the use of a furnace create dry conditions that are not only uncomfortable for skin, but that also contribute to fine lines and a dull, scaly look.

All of these tips give skin instant relief and, at the same time, provide for healthier, younger looking skin down the road. Many of the signs of aging are due to a lack of care early on in life. Take care of your skin, and it will take care of you.

  1. Humidifiers: Increase the humidity in your room while you sleep with a warm or cool mist humidifier. Just be sure to follow the instructions for cleaning and sanitizing your humidifier exactly to avoid mold and bacteria problems.
  2. Hydrating Scrubs: A mixture of honey and sugar makes an easy DIY body scrub that is designed to hydrate, reduce inflammation and increase circulation.
  3. Lactic Acid Products: A powerful exfoliant, great for scaly winter skin and an excellent moisturizer at the same time, look for lactic acid washes, lotions and bath additives to bring back your glow.
  4. Oil and Lotion: Use an oil cleanser all over your body in the shower, and then slather on moisturizer after rinsing and gently towel drying.   The lotion will help keep the oil residue close to your skin.
  5. Shower Quickly: One of the worst things you can do for dry skin is to take a long, hot shower. This habit strips your skin of much needed moisture.
  6. Be Gentle: Use fine particle exfoliators and sensitive skin formulas in the winter.
  7. Sleep in Moisture: Slather lotion on very thickly (so that it is still visible) and then sleep in gloves and socks.
  8. Overnight Masks: There are a variety of overnight masks that can help with increasing moisture in the skin while you sleep!
  9. Body Care: It’s not just your face that is suffering from dry air, your neck, the backs of your hands and even your knees and elbows are common sites of obvious aging, so take extra care with them too.
  10. Sunblock: Yes, you must wear sunblock year-round, including during winter months.
