What Is 3D Dentistry?

Similar to the laser imaging or computer aide surgery that medical doctors practice, 3D dentistry or dental imaging is a way for dentists to see inside the mouth and jawbone in a virtual manner. This allows the dentist to determine the best course of action during a dental implant procedure.

Using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) machines, dentists are able to obtain 3-dimensional images of the mouth, which provide a more detailed overview than traditional X-rays. CBCT devices have many different dental applications including: implants, reconstructive surgery, bone grafting, root canals, and orthodontic treatment.

By using this imaging technology, Dr. Jugan is able to obtain different views of the mouth to very precisely plan the procedure and determine the best placement option with minimal disruption to the patient.

The device is also used during the implant procedure to provide a real-time view of the bone and tissues underneath the gum as well as placement of the implant itself. This helps facilitate optimum placement of the implant in relation to the rest of the teeth.

The end result is a less invasive, quicker, more accurate dental implant process.

How 3D Dental Imaging Works

During your 3D-guided dental implant procedure, Dr. Jugan will place a tracking device on your teeth so that a 3D scan can be taken. The scan is sent to a computer where the image can be viewed and manipulated. Dr. Jugan will examine the image to verify location and spacing surrounding the implant site. Once he has determined the best course of action regarding placement, the physical work begins.

Using the imaging technology, Dr. Jugan creates extremely targeted, minimally-invasive incisions to insert and secure the implant.
